Education, Parks, and Recreation

The Emmet County Conservation Board (ECCB) and staff members have spent many hours focusing on education, parks and recreation. Over the years our parks and wildlife areas have been a vital part of our programming; additionally, in recent years, the environmental education program has been brought to the forefront. The environmental education program has, for several years, offered various outdoor classroom experiences for middle school students, the green ash tree program for third graders, second grade farm safety day, hunter education programs, bird watching programs and may other presentations.

The addition of a naturalist on staff enhanced the continuation of these programs and made possible new offerings for the schools. Some topics covered are bats, bees, insects, mammals, prairies and trees. While school programming has increased, public programming numbers, too, have been on the rise. Yearly programs have become available as part of Wings & Wetlands Weekend, Peterson Point Pioneer Day, Christmas on the Farm, and various requested programming on oak trees, ecology, fishing, water safety, basic wildlife management, reptiles, amphibians, and other topics.

Youth programming has expanded with the creation of our Youth Fall Day, Youth Pheasant Hunt and our Youth Fishing Day. For 4-H groups, the Boy Scouts, church camps, local libraries and various other groups, the ECCB and staff continue to build upon programs concerning bat houses, birdhouses, fishing and other topics. Other important additions to the list have been programs for some of the nursing homes. The ECCB strives to reach all age groups and interested people with appropriate programming.

Currently education is an increasingly significant aspect of ECCB objectives. The planning and building of the nature center demonstrates the board's commitment for the future. For students and adults alike, this project will provide opportunities to interact with our natural resources in a user-friendly learning environment. Preserving history is vital to Emmet County, and from that history we have learned the need to respect the present and do our part to preserve the future. The ECCB realizes parks and recreation are integral parts of Emmet County; and by making education a high priority, we help ensure that the youth of today become the keepers of the land for the future.
